countertops are in!

25 Jan

Countertops went in on Friday! Unfortunately we have some issues that still need to be addressed with the countertops and we should know what will happen with that soon. Unfortunately one of the slabs of counter is slightly but noticeably darker than all of the others and also a bit too short. The other major problem is that there are quite a few very small rust marks in the counters. We are hoping that the installers can come back and clean them out…if not there are several other slabs that will also need to be replaced. But, in any case they are in for now and here is what they look like!

I started unpacking wedding registry boxes (many of which had never even been opened) on Saturday and putting our dishes in the cabinets and that was so exciting! It was like Christmas!

cabinets and countertops!

22 Jan

I just wanted to post a quick update of the progress on the kitchen! My husband Mike and his awesome coworker Tory spent the past two weekends working all hours finishing the cabinets – removing hinges, taping off areas, applying the sealer, sanding, top coating, more sanding, etc. It was QUITE the process but I am so proud of how the cabinets look. The finish is a lovely matte finish that is just perfect. Then yesterday, uncle Tom came back for the day to make sure all of the cabinets were straight and even. And this morning, the countertops are being installed! It’s been quite a few weeks and I’m so excited for this step!

Next, we’ll be putting the cabinet shelves in place, installing the kickplates, installing the sleek stainless handles, and the microwave and range hood for the island.

We finally chose our flooring as well, it’s an awesome mineral black birch. We got a great deal and it is very different looking – like nothing I’ve seen before. It is the sort of flooring that I think will look great installed and will also wear really well and won’t look bad with some knicks and scratches which are bound to happen. So, we’ll be ordering the flooring very soon and then finding an installer. We’re hoping that my uncle Chris is able to install for us, but if not we will be looking for an installer. Once we’ve installed the flooring, we can put the gas range, dishwasher, and fridge in place and actually start using the kitchen! In the meantime, I CAN’T WAIT to start unpacking boxes and putting stuff in those cabinets!

I’m going to wait to post pics of the kitchen until the counters are in, but for now here is a pic of the flooring that we have chosen.
