steal – turquoise mod dining room

23 Sep

Last week I started a new series called splurge and steal…with what could be my dream room (because a girl can dream, right?) and what would be my reality (because money doesn’t grown on trees)! It all started with this light fixture (the Le Soleil Pendant) that I spotted in a home design magazine, that retails for around $1500.

So, then I posted my “splurge” dining room based around this light fixture. Here it is below for recap.

Sources:

1 | La Soleil light pendant, $1551 ( aka my dream light fixture, probably my favorite EVER)

2 | Jonathan Adler Owl Scuplture, $195 (Owls are just cool)

3 | Ventana Mirror, nickel and white, $495 (a very pretty mirror)

4 | 1970′s Lucite Framed Dark Turquoise Lacquer Buffet, if you have to ask you can’t afford it price unknown (I am seriously in lurve with this buffet)

5 | Wegner wishbone chair, caspian blue, $895 each (Likewise, these chairs are AMAZING)

6 | Platner Dining Table, $3343 (I want something made by Platner before I die)

7 | Ombre Rug, $799 (This rug is just perfect)

GRAND TOTAL $9963 for everything and four of the Wegner chairs, not including the cost of the buffet since it is unknown.

And now it’s time for the STEAL!! drumroll please :)

1 | Vintage Teal Pendant Light, $150 (this would be a great substitue pendant – though I’m sad to say it has sold since I first found it on etsy)

2 | Owl Vase, $19.99

3 | Convex Mirrors, $65 for both

4 | Dumont Buffet, $599

5| Birch Sapling White Dining Chairs , $88.99 each

6| Silverado Dining Table,  $299

7 | Ombre Rug, $799 (This rug is just perfect)

8 | Mariposa Table Lamp, $149

GRAND TOTAL $2437 for everything and four of the dining chairs.

And get this – I contacted the seller of the this amazing piece (from the splurge board) and got an asking price. You won’t even believe. I dare you to guess and then scroll down and I’ll post the price.

a little more…

almost there…

The asking price for the amazing lucite and turquoise vintage buffet is $11,392!! I kid you not! My jaw dropped when I saw that email. I am sure someone will come along and buy it, it’s gorgeous. But wow.

So, that brings the grand total for the splurge room to $21,355! And the grand total for the steal room to $2,437! That is a difference of $18,918! So, which one do you like better, if you had no idea on the price?

splurge and steal

17 Sep

I spotted this light fixture recently in one of the design magazines (Austin Monthly Home) I subscribe to.

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it. However, if I were to ever buy it, it would be a TOTAL splurge. I can’t even imagine spending $1500+ on a light fixture, but this is one where I *just* might, I love it that much. Of course, we don’t really have a place in our house that would even work, so it’s just a dream for now. But, seeing it got me to thinking…and I decided to create a design board/dream dining room based around this fixture. I must have too much time of my hands. But no, I actually don’t have enough time, but this is a fun hobby for me! I call it splurge, because all of the amazing pieces on this board are a total splurge (at least to me)! If I had the means, I would totally redecorate my dining area around this light. And of course if I had the money I’d have to get an amazing vintage buffet and Platner chrome and glass table, right?

STAY TUNED for my STEAL version of this dining room next week!

mexico…

13 Sep

Margaritas, guacamole, sand and sun…that was all I was thinking about last week as we were preparing to head out to Cozumel for a wedding shoot (yes, my job is awesome). We are lucky to have some awesome relatives and parents who love our Zoey. So, Zoey stayed with nana and papa while Mike and I had a lovely break. Mike and I have a major love affair with Mexico. It’s where we got married almost three years ago (in Playa del Carmen to be exact) and where we spent our honeymoon (Isla Mujeres). I’ve been so lucky to have been to the Riviera Maya/Cancun area many times to photograph weddings – it seems I get to go once and sometimes twice a year. Mexico has gotten a lot of bad press lately for being unsafe (and no doubt there are places that are unsafe) but we were lucky that we didn’t experience any issues while we were there. The people there are nice, the food is awesome, and the drinks strong the way I like them :) Though I was working some of our short trip, we did spend Sunday laying in the sun, swimming, and snorkeling in the famed reefs of Cozumel. We saw barracuda, a sea turtle, a huge lobster (yum), lots of beautiful fish, and thankfully NO sharks, haha! It was a great trip and I can’t wait to go back, and to take Zoey there someday. Here is one pic from my phone of the flight into Cozumel (on a tiny scary Mexican plane, but we flew so low we had amazing views)!

I will get back to posting on our home improvements soon – now that we are back from travels and settling back into our regular routine! But in the meantime, here are a few more funny things. First, hipsters. Austin is FULL of them, and this describes them to a tee :)

I thought this pic was really cute – poor iphone quality but funny nonetheless!

And how awesome are these little mini albums? They are called accordian mini albums and they are 3″ square. I had one made for me and Mike as well as for Zoey’s grandparents. LOVE them. I had them made thru my pro photographer lab but they are available to the general public at Mpix.

That’s all I’ve got for now! Gotta finish unpacking. We’ve got lots in the works for the house so hopefully we will have some new pics soon!

colorado!

8 Sep

I’ve been meaning to post photos from our trip to Colorado for months now (two months to be exact)! We went to Estes Park, Colorado for a week in July to participate in my brother’s wedding and to have a little family vacation. Unfortunately, Mike had major work obligations so he was only about to be with us for a couple days of the trip, but Zoey’s grandparents got to spend a lot of time with her which they loved. We flew into Denver where we stayed for a day (and drove down to Colorado Springs to see the Garden of the Gods, which you will see in the first set of photos). Then, we drove up to Estes Park, stopping in Boulder for lunch on the way. Estes Park was absolutely amazing, perfect weather (especially compared to Austin at the time), and just so pretty everywhere you looked. We drove up into Rocky Mountain National Park a couple times and even got to see snow! In July! Jeremy and Lindsay’s wedding was beautiful and amazing and so much fun! So much fun in fact that my aunt Karen fell and broke her wrist! It was quite the fun and eventful reception. All in all, we were in Colorado for a week and loved every minute of it! It was so nice to spend some quality time with family. Here are some pics!

zoey’s room now

7 Sep

It’s been a very long time (over a year) since I posted any photos of Zoey’s room, and things haven’t changed too much but I’ve added a few updates since then so I wanted to post some new photos! Here are the photos of Zoey’s room from right before she was born.

And here it is now! This shot is as you walk into the room . The room is a little crowded to me, especially now that she has toys EVERYWHERE on a daily basis :) So, I am looking forward to the day when we transition from the crib to sleeping in the daybed (and move the crib into storage). We intend to reuse the crib for the next baby, someday…

The bulletin pin board is from Hobby Lobby.

The wall art is vintage, spraypainted yellow. Lamp from Urban Outfitters. Dresser is vintage from local store Uptown Modern.

The daybed is from West Elm, pillows from Homegoods and Target. The striped curtains are a newer addition, handmade by yours truly. I would love to add a DIY valance at some point…

Cute baby Zoey just woke up from a nap!

Pick me up already!

This is a gallery wrap photo of Zoey and her papa, who passed away in May of this year. This is my favorite photo of them together.

Vintage yellow tufted chair is vintage from Craigslist. Bedding is custom made from Etsy seller (see this link for sources on bedding and crib)

One last new addition, this cute mobile is custom made from unpetitlapin.

please keep central texas in your thoughts and prayers

6 Sep

This is what we have been dealing with in Central Texas over the holiday weekend (photo credit to Deanna Roy) – this is a city of Austin skyline shot with the fires South of Austin in Bastrop raging and filling the sky with smoke.

High winds (but ironically not a drop of rain) brought on by the hurricane along with a severe drought (no measurable rain in 6+ months) has led to fires popping up all over the place. SO many people have lost their homes, it’s devastating. We are so lucky to be about 25 miles away from the horrible Bastrop fire, but we are still of course on alert. Please do a rain dance for us, we need it so badly!
